Over the past few months I've been selling a lot of refurbished and updated replacement Nexus 7 2012 16gb motherboards and hardly any 32gb motherboards. Now you may not think this is strange, if your 16gb motherboard gets hit by the deadline Android 5 upgrade lockout bug, then you'd naturally replace it with another 16gb board.

But its a really crazy thing to do.

The thing is, all the 8gb, 16gb and 32gb motherboards in the Nexus 7 2012 are plug and play slot and connector compatible. The only difference is the amount of RAM storage on the motherboard.

What this means is that if you 8gb, 16gb or 32gb motherboard dies or locks up, you can purchase one of my fully rested and updated 32gb motherboards and plug it in.

It isn't a difficult task if you are a suitably competent technical person, and to make thing even easier I have posted a whole list of 'How I Do It' videos on the fixed1t Nexus 7 Youtube playlist, the link is below:

The difference in price between the 16gb and the 32gb motherboard is marginal and if you are opening the tablet it makes sense to upgrade at the same time, doesn't it?

I sell a range of replacement, reconditioned, Nexus 7 parts on my fixed1t eBay pages, the link is below.
Due to the difficulties in performing this task and the fragile nature of the LCD I recommend watching Part 1 before Watching Part 2, and watching both before considering it.

Once its removed, then I begin the simple process of removing the awful glue off the LCD screen.

This is covered in the following blog entry:

This video is purely for educational purposes to show how I successfully remove, the broken digitiser from the working LCD screen without destroying it. If you undertake this task it is entirely at your on risk and your responsibility, I accept no responsibility for what you do.

This is a delicate operation to perform and the slightest error will result in the destruction of the LCD.
What I realised from the labels etc was that the best glue for removing it was the glue itself. So having purchased and tried all manner of expensive specialist solvents without success, I made myself a Tea and sat there picking at the screen, and the glue stuck to my finger, when I pulled it off,
Asus says there is NO SIMPLE FIX and that the motherboard must be replaced, costing owners in excess of $200+.

Never being one for admitting failure, I've now I've figured out how to do it pretty consistently offering sufferers a low cost replacement motherboard and money back on the locked motherboard, a real win win situation.

However, one 8GB Nexus 7 running Lollipop has me a little stumped, not because I couldn't replace LOLLIPOP with KITKAT 4.4.4

but because the owner had set up the screen lock on the device to be portrait. How is this a problem I hear you ask, well the device has a cracked screen and like other devices with cracked screen it means that half of the Touchscreen does not work. This isn't normally an issue, but to log onto a new network

you need to tap the screen and type into it across its surface.

With half the screen dead, that isn't possible. If the orientation lock wasn't on, then rotating the device several times would allow the user to find working areas on the touch screen to input all the details, but with the orientation screen lock in place your restricted to what you get. If the keyboard characters of network name are in a bad area, your screwed.

So my advise is:

If you need to set the screen lock on (i.e. for reading on a train etc) then please; for your own sake and to reduce repair costs if the unit is damaged; turn it off again as soon as you can.

This would have been a 15 minute job but now I need to swap the motherboard and into other machines and back again and its an expensive process in 'man hours for the repair'.

The common symptom of this terminal condition, is for the device to be stuck in a loop at the Google flash stage. The device goes no further however long it is left.

So before deciding to install Android Google 5 LOLLIPOP

I recommend you look at the additional functionality Android OS 5 LOLLIPOP is offering over 4.4.4 KITKA, and decide if its worth risking killing your Nexus 7 to have this upgrade?

To give you some idea of how I feel about this, I have downgraded my LOLLIPOP Nexus 7 devices to KITKAT 4.4.4

I discovered a series of broken links on my fixed1t Nexus 7 webpages, I think these happened with my redesign of the fixed1t site and blogs to make them Google mobile friendly.

As you know amongst the many things I do, I rebuild and fix Asus Google 1st Generation Nexus 7's and have a loyal following on my fixed1t eBay with 100% customer positive feedback.

Here is a Picture of an opened up Nexus 7 First Generation 2012

So I've been through all of the following pages on my fixed1t.co.uk website:

fixed1t Nexus 7 Refurbishments

Nexus 7 Screen Loca Glue Removal

Nexus 7 Lithium Battery Replacement

I've also added links to purchase spare and re-cycled parts here:

Check out fixed1t eBay for the latest deals of Nexus 7 Parts

and also in case I don't have the parts for your Nexus 7, here, as in the classic film:

where Kris Kringle (Santa Klaus) tells Macy's customers to go to competitors stores, if they don't stock the item the child wants from Santa ( I love this film).

I added a link to:

I hope my bloggers, YouTube and Google+ Subscribers find these useful.

Thanks for the continued support.
After a number of recent questions from Subscribers to my fixed1t Nexus 7 Youtube Playlist asking how I separate a Working LCD on a Nexus 7 2012 from its smashed glued on Touchscreen, I decided to spill the beans. If you have a Nexus 7 with a cracked screen and want to buy a replacement Digitiser and use your existing working LCD, rather than pay £39+ shipping or $60+ for the LCD Digitiser unit, then here is how I do it every few days.

The answer is in two parts and consists of 2 x videos, to make things simple the videos have links embedded in them to link to their opposite number.

Also once the LCD has been successfully separated from the Digitiser, then the funs begins or trying to remove the awful Nexus 7 LOCA glue from the LCD without destroying it. Normal LOCA Glue Remover as advertised on eBay etc, won't shift it, neither will Isopropyl ALCOHOL, not Acetone. The only real way to shift it is be using the fixed1t Nexus 7 LOCA glue removing putty, which comes free when the split the Nexus 7 LCD from the Digitiser.

If planning to undertake this task then I recommend watching all 4 x videos through completely at least once, this is a 'One Chance' task and if a mistake is made then the LCD Display could get broken requiring the more expensive Touchscreen+LCD unit to be purchased.

I've been publishing working Nexus 7 breakdown, dismantling, installation and repair Youtube videos for some years, but realised that having them scattered in different Blogs with

fixed1t

at the start of the title reduced Blog traffic and views.
Therefore, I've created the Blog:

Nexus 7 Repair And Fixes

This Blog will contain information and assessments of Nexus 7 issues along with my own fixed1t repair videos and links to other videos and articles that Nexus 7 1st Generation owners or prospective purchasers may find of use.

If you have previous Bookmarks to fixed1t Nexus 7 Blog postings then please delete them as they will no longer work and update your bookmarks to the blog link in this page above.

I am also taking the opportunity to embed links in some of my youtube videos, as a purple banner note in the top right hand corner, to take you to a playlists of my other associated Toy Repair fixed1t, videos so you won't have to search around for the next videos. There is also a blue banner that will take you to the fixed1t website with links to fixed1t eBay if you are interested in purchasing tried and tested refurbished parts from a seller with 100% positive feedback from Nexus 7 buyers.

If you have a few moments it would be great if you could try it out by selecting the video below and let me know if this works, by leaving a note on this post, thanks.
Keeping the Android device in good condition will ensure it keeps working longer, and this can be done by considering the following 10 points and acting on them.

In this blog entry I will refer to a Google Asus Nexus 7 Android Tablet, but this applies equally with any Android tablet.

1. Wear And Tear

If the Nexus 7 is getting heavy usage, then its important to ensure you keep it in a protected padded case. The more protective the case, the less likely it is to suffer from failure due to wear and tear. Remember manufacturers warranties only rarely cover wear and tear. If its not covered they are unlikley to fix it or repair it for free.

2. Abuse And Breakage

If you abuse the Nexus 7 by dropping it, dropping other objects on it or accidentally spilling liquid on it (toddlers love to do this), then even if its in warranty the manufacturer is unlikely to fix it or repair it for free. As above keep the Nexus 7 in a suitable case or bag and out of the reach of animals and small children.

3. Ambient Conditions

If you use the Nexus 7 in adverse weather conditions or in a hostile environments then the internal contacts between its sophisticated components will become corroded or damaged causing intermittent problems. Users should select a case to meet their needs.

4. Dirty contacts

Dirty contacts because of any of the above issues, is a problem for the Nexus 7. If the dirty contact hasn't turned into corrosion then it can be cleaned with Isopropyl Alcohol or similar once the Nexus 7 has been safely opened and the battery disconnected.

5. Damage Charger

Unfortunately power chargers are trip hazards, or magnets for small children and animals that will happily pull them apart. The modern chargers and 'Switch Mode Power Supplies' and are very effective, but unlike old transformers they do not step down the voltage from hundreds of volts to 5v using a sealed transformer. The operate at max voltage internally opening them is a real 'Danger of Death'. Therefore do not tape up a cracked charger or one which has suffered water or chemical damage. Throw it away and get a new one.

6. Damage Charger Lead

If the lead from the charger becomes loose or frayed then throw the charger away and get another.

7. Damage Charger Port Connector

The minute size of the charger port on the Nexus 7 means that if handled roughly it will fail, it too is also a magnet for small children to push their food, fingers and other items into the hole. These ports can be cleaned but it is a microscopic job involving extreme care and patience.

This Nexus 7 youtube video shows how to remove a USB Charging Port with Headphone Socket

8. Over Heating/Cooling

The Nexus 7 is made to operate within certain temperature constraints. If it gets too hot then the circuitry will become electronically noisy and with begin to fail. Do not, for example, watch long videos on the Nexus 7 with it resting on blankets of Duvet. Likewise if it gets cold outside and is brought into a warm room give it chance to warm up and dry out before switching it on. If it gets wet, leave it to dry in a sealed plastic tube wrapped in a dry towel and surrounded by dry rice.

9. Poor Charging Regime

With old Nicad Batteries you had to ensure they were fully charged and discharged completely due to an inherent memory effect problem. This is not necessary for the Lithium Battery within the Nexus 7. These batteries should be kept charged, charging them every few days even we not in use. Do no allow them to fully discharge all the time as this will shorten their life considerably.

10. Dead Battery

If the battery appears dead, placing it on charge over night, then taking it off charge and leaving it for another 24 hours before placing it on charge again, will often revitalise it. When all else fails the buy a replacement. New batteries are expensive so you might want to consider a 2nd user battery. Not sure which Battery to choose and you do have a Nexus 7 1st generation 2012? Check out the following battery related fixed1t videos:

Under normal circumstance Skype on Android keeps copies of all conversations, even after you close the conversation and apparently delete them. This means they can end up popping up at a later date on another platform with potential embarrassing or dangerous consequences. This video explains how to get rid of them completely.
The tension this glass is under means that when it breaks under pressure it tends to explode upwards and outwards showering the area and the person working on it with ultra thin glass shards. If these were to get in your eyes they would cause extensive and extremely painful damage to the eyes.
I'm glad I invested in my pair of Bolle safety glasses and I'm about to purchase some more with 2 and 3 reading glass strengths.

Bolle sunglasses and very expensive, but for some reason their safety glasses (made to the same high standard) and remarkably cheap, cheaper than some of the awful plastic wraparounds that scratch as soon as you touch them available at various gardening and DIY outlets.
Here are some links I used to purchase my own glasses.
